Fool’s Kingdom

Fool’s Kingdom formed in 1979 from a band that sprung from our High School Talent Show. They hung around for a few years but in early 1983 they went their separate ways. Well, not Trevor and Theo who continued on to form the first version of Pineapple Doughnut.

All these tracks come from an old cassette tape and have been remastered using the standard plugin in Studio Logic and a bit of reverb has been added.

Ash Wednesday was recorded in the basement of Coogee Bay Road using whatever microphones we had at the time, an 8 channel analogue mixer Jim (our Keyboard player) made from a kit, and a reel to reel two track tape recorder. The band played the track in one go in stereo then we bounced that onto a cassette while we sang the overdubs.

The other live tracks are marked as 4 track but they only survive as stereo mixes. None of us remember what we used the 4 tracks for but it would have certainly been one track for vocals. How the other three were used is lost in the mists of time. Perhaps Guitar/Bass, Drums and Keyboard?

Les Rankin

Les was the guitar player and attracted the most attention from the females in the audience. He also sang a few tunes and harmonies.

John Lear

John (on the right) was our sound guy and very sound he was too as he also helped lug the gear. He was responsible for the mix of the band tracks above.

Jim Franklin

Jim, as should be obvious, was our keyboard player. He was the most educated musician in the band and could read music and everything.

Trevor Daly

Trevor was our bottom end and pretty good at it too. He was also good at breaking strings, which is hard to do on a bass. Probably those stone picks he liked at the time.

Theo ten Brummelaar

Theo set down the beat and sang the lead on most songs. He is seen here in the Studio (basement) replete with carpet on the walls so the neighbours don’t get upset.
